PROTECT YOUR FAMILY IN POOL SEASON

PROTECT YOUR FAMILY IN POOL SEASON

Swimming is a summer must in our home… Especially in the Texas heat. It’s fun, refreshing, and a great way for your family to stay active. But if you swim in chlorinated pools, you’ve probably wondered—is all that chlorine good for our skin and lungs? The answer is that it is not healthy to just have chlorine soak into your skin and the summer heat makes things worse – But I have some good news, you don’t have to give up the pool. With just a few smart habits, you can balance the benefits of swimming with simple ways to protect your health.

Chlorine keeps pools clean by killing bacteria—but it’s also a strong chemical. Over time, regular exposure can be harsh on:

  • Your skin (it strips natural oils)

  • Your lungs (especially in indoor pools)

  • Your body’s overall “toxic load”

Did You Know? Research shows that competitive swimmers often have changes to their skin barrier compared to athletes who train outside the water.

When chlorine mixes with stuff like sweat, skin cells, and pee (yep, it happens), it forms chloramines—and they’re worse than chlorine alone.

Chloramines are linked to:

  1. Red, itchy skin

  2. Burning, watery eyes

  3. Breathing issues (especially for kids with asthma

That strong “chlorine smell”? It’s not pure chlorine—it’s chloramines. And that scent means your pool needs better ventilation or a water refresh.

Vitamin C (aka ascorbic acid) is a powerful antioxidant that neutralizes chlorine and chloramines on your skin. When applied topically:

  • It transforms harsh chemicals into gentle, harmless compounds.
  • It’s safe and effective for all ages.
  • It pairs beautifully with moisturizer after swimming

Swimming should feel good—not leave you itchy, red, or worried about chemicals. Using a Vitamin C spray and moisturizing after your swim, you can enjoy the pool without soaking in the downside.

Make your own, skip the chemicals and be at peace! Because this easy homemade spray is all you need post-swim to keep your family healthy!

Below are some more in depth instructions.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup distilled water

  • 1 teaspoon ascorbic acid powder (Vitamin C)

  • 1 amber glass spray bottle (8 oz recommended)

(Why glass? Vitamin C breaks down plastic. If using glass near the pool, use a silicone sleeve to reduce risk of breakage.)

How to Make It:

  1. Stir 1 tsp of ascorbic acid into 1 cup of distilled water.

  2. Mix until fully dissolved.

  3. Pour into your amber glass spray bottle.

  4. Shake before each use, spray onto skin after swimming, and pat dry.

Follow with a moisturizer to lock in hydration and help repair the skin barrier.
