The 5 R’s Of Gut Health

The 5 R’s Of Gut Health

served healthy breakfast on wooden table

I recently learned about the 5R protocol, which is a really practical way to support gut health. It’s often used in functional medicine and focuses on five key steps: removing things that harm the gut (like bad bacteria or irritants), replacing what’s missing (like enzymes or stomach acid), reinoculating with good bacteria, repairing the gut lining, and rebalancing lifestyle factors like stress and sleep.

What I found so interesting is how this approach doesn’t just treat symptoms—it actually helps get to the root of gut issues like bloating, fatigue, food sensitivities, or skin problems. If someone’s been dealing with any of that, starting with a good health history, reviewing symptoms, and maybe even doing some basic blood work or a stool test can make a big difference in figuring out what your body really needs.

It made me realize how much can change when you actually address the gut as the foundation of health. If you’re curious, even simple steps like cutting back inflammatory foods, taking a quality probiotic, or supporting digestion with things like digestive bitters or enzymes could be a great starting point.

This is a natural way to reset and heal your gut, and you can actually start applying it right now:

  • Remove: Cut back on sugar, processed foods, and gluten for a couple weeks. Try swapping soda for sparkling water or processed snacks for fruit and nuts.

  • Replace: Add things that help digestion, like a splash of apple cider vinegar in water before meals or a digestive enzyme.

  • Reinoculate: Eat more fermented foods like sauerkraut, kimchi, or plain yogurt—or take a good probiotic.

  • Repair: Support your gut lining with bone broth, aloe vera juice, or L-glutamine powder.

  • Rebalance: Prioritize sleep, reduce stress (deep breathing or walks outside), and move your body daily.

Even doing a few of these can really help with bloating, fatigue, and food sensitivities. It’s all about giving your gut what it needs to heal.

Homemade Summer Popsicle

These are perfect for a summer treat that’s healthy, kid-friendly, and fun to make! Organic fruit + grass-fed yogurt = pure goodness!

Ingredients:

  • 1 ripe banana
  • 1 cup organic strawberries (fresh or frozen)
  • ¾ cup grass-fed plain Greek yogurt
  • Splash of vanilla extract (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Peel the banana and add it to a blender.
  2. Add the strawberries, yogurt, and optional splash of vanilla.
  3. Blend until completely smooth.
  4. Taste-test and adjust — if it’s not sweet enough, add a few extra strawberries or a tiny drizzle of honey (if desired and age-appropriate).
  5. Pour the mixture into popsicle molds.
  6. Insert sticks and freeze for 4–6 hours, or until fully frozen.
  7. Remove by running the mold under warm water for a few seconds.

Tips for Success:

  • Use silicone molds for easy release.
  • If using frozen strawberries, no need to thaw — just blend longer.
  • Let your kids help pour the mix into the molds — they’ll love it!
  • Want layers? Blend fruit separately and pour in stages, freezing a bit between layers.

Benefits:

  1. Protein from Greek yogurt for growing muscles.
  2. Vitamin C from strawberries to boost immunity.
  3. No added sugar, dyes, or preservatives.

8 Homeopathic Options For Coughs

8 Homeopathic Options For Coughs

medicine bottle on the table

An important part of choosing the correct homeopathic remedy for a cough is identifying the type of cough you are treating. Below are 8 of the remedies that are my go-to’s to help your family heal naturally! If you didn’t know this:

  • A wet cough will produce phlegm. It may feel like something is stuck in your throat and may cause a wheezing or rattling sound.
  • A dry cough will not produce phlegm. It may have a barking or rough sound.

It can be tricky to find the correct remedy. If you don’t see improvement in symptoms after 30 minutes or less, repeat the dose; if improvement doesn’t occur after two doses, switch remedies. An extra remedy I did not list is, Ipecacuanha, which is good for hacking coughs that result in vomiting. These coughs can cause choking, are dry and irritating and come on in fits. Infants and toddlers whose coughs cause them to vomit often do well with this remedy.

FIRST AID FOR SKIN

It can be very beneficial to have some of these items on hand.

I cannot tell you how many times I have been so grateful that I had purchased these items… (having two boys.) Growing up – I didn’t know that there were natural options for your skin. I would use things like Neosporin when I got hurt and peroxide – which are not great things to use, if you didn’t know! 🙂

So, I wanted to provide some options for you and your family that you may not have been aware of. Hopefully this is a help to you! You can also find them on our amazon storefront at the links below.
