How To Detox From A Scan

How To Detox From A Scan

How to Support Your Body After Scans.

If you’ve ever had an MRI, CT scan, PET scan, or even a series of X-rays, you’ve probably wondered afterward: “Is there anything I can do to support my body?” I found myself asking the same question recently as I have an upcoming scan. I’m always interested in how to best support my body after it’s been through something. There isn’t one magic supplement or detox protocol. Instead, most of the basics that support overall health are the same things that help your body recover from just about anything.

1. Hydrate well.

This sounds simple, but it’s easy to underestimate. Drinking enough water, along with getting adequate minerals and electrolytes when appropriate, helps support normal kidney function and the body’s natural elimination processes.

2. Support your body’s built-in detox systems.

Your body already has an incredible detoxification system. Your liver, kidneys, digestive tract, and lymphatic system are working around the clock without needing a fancy cleanse. Supporting them often looks less glamorous than social media makes it seem:

  • Eating enough fiber
  • Staying hydrated
  • Moving your body
  • Sleeping well
  • Eating nutrient-dense foods

Sometimes the basics really are the most powerful.

3. Sweat regularly.

Whether that’s through exercise, a sauna, or simply staying active, sweating is something many people enjoy incorporating into their wellness routine. If you already use a sauna or take warm detox baths (I have a previous blog on this), it may be a good time to prioritize them, as long as your healthcare provider has not advised otherwise.

4. Eat foods your body recognizes.

Rather than looking for the next miracle supplement, I like to come back to whole organic foods. These foods provide vitamins, minerals, and plant compounds that support overall health, not just after a scan. Focus on getting. things in your system like:

  • Colorful berries
  • Leafy greens
  • Fresh herbs
  • Healthy fats
  • A variety of antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables

A Few Simple Things I Will Try:

  • Drinking organic green tea or matcha
  • Eating more organic cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and cauliflower
  • Cooking with fresh organic herbs
  • Including organic sea vegetables when I can
  • Making recovery and sleep a priority

None of these are about “undoing” a scan. They are just habits that support health every day. Our bodies were designed with remarkable systems for healing, adapting, and recovering. Sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is support those systems well and then trust them to do what they were created to do.

EGG (ONLY) BURGER BUN RECIPE

EGG (ONLY) BURGER BUN RECIPE

Burger buns made from eggs are one of the simplest ways to upgrade your burger without sacrificing flavor or texture. When you swap processed bread for a whole-food ingredient like eggs, you’re choosing something naturally rich in protein, healthy fats, and essential nutrients. Eggs contain choline for brain health, B vitamins for energy, and complete amino acids that support muscle and metabolic function. Unlike traditional buns, egg-based buns are grain-free, lower in carbohydrates, and free from added sugars or preservatives. That means fewer blood sugar spikes and more sustained energy after your meal. They’re also incredibly satisfying, helping you feel full without feeling heavy. If you use pasture-raised, organic, regenerative eggs, you’re not only nourishing your body but also supporting better farming practices. Sometimes the best upgrades are the simplest ones — and two eggs might just be all you need.

BATHTIME DETOX

BATHTIME DETOX

a romantic setting in the bathroom

A detox bath is a simple tool you can use at home when you or your kids aren’t feeling your best in the winter. This is a way to be empowered to do something when you know your body is fighting something. The warm water helps the body loosen up, warm up, and settle down from the stress that comes with being sick or run down. It’s an easy way to support comfort, promote rest, and help the body reset without needing anything fancy or expensive. You do not need to add all of these at once, but you can mix them. Please always be aware of any sensitivities or allergies when considering using these products in a bath. If you are bathing a child, ensure that they are over 6 months when using some of these items. Know that this is not medical advice but something personal we do at home with our family.

ORAL HEALTH REVEALS YOUR HEALTH

UNCOMMON
APPROACH

your mouth is a reflection of your health.

Most people think dental care is a separate category of health, getting your teeth cleaned is something you do twice a year and then forget about. But oral health is one of the most, uncommon yet powerful areas you have the power to improve. Your mouth isn’t just where symptoms show up. It’s where many long-term health problems actually begin.

If you’ve ever dealt with chronic inflammation, fatigue, headaches, hormone chaos, weird immune reactions, or recurring infections… Your mouth might be playing a bigger role than you realize. I didn’t fully understand this myself until recently, when a 15+ year-old root canal of mine had to be removed and the process opened my eyes to how deeply oral health affects everything.

1. Your Teeth Are Connected to Organs

In holistic dentistry, each tooth sits on an energetic meridian connected to specific organs or systems.

They are literal pathways of anatomy, neurology, and lymph pathways overlapping.
  • Upper molars → stomach & pancreas
  • Lower premolars → lungs & large intestine
  • Front teeth → kidneys & bladder
  • Wisdom teeth → heart & central nervous system

So when a tooth is infected, dead, or root-canaled, it can create subtle but ongoing dysfunction within the organ it’s linked to. For over a decade, I had no idea that my old root canal could be quietly impacting my immune system, inflammation levels, or energy.

2. What I Didn’t Know About My Root Canal

When my dentist recently removed my (over) 15-year-old root canal – I had no major pain to warn me. No swelling. No obvious red flags. But I had done research and I knew removing it was the next step I wanted to take to improve my health. The moment that tooth was taken out, I am going to be honest, it felt like all hell broke loose… and I guess it made sense. The healing process honestly has been horrendous, far more involved, painful, and slow than I expected. But that’s what happens when your body has been fighting an infection for years without you realizing it.

The surgery wasn’t just removal. It was eviction of a long-term burden my immune system had been carrying and even though the healing has been hard, I already feel a shift:
  • My body feels “lighter”
  • My energy isn’t dipping as sharply
  • The fight or flight norm I was living with has shifted
  • My nervous system feels less reactive

I’m excited for the chronic inflammation to finally calm down as the deeper layers of healing begin. Because now I know: The tooth I had removed was affecting me more than I imagined.

3. Gum Inflammation Is a Whole-Body Warning Light

Gums are full of blood vessels and if anything is happening it actually impacts your whole body in seconds.

Inflamed gums can correlate with:
  • Heart issues
  • Insulin resistance
  • Cognitive decline
  • Autoimmune flares
  • Pregnancy complications
  • Hormone imbalance
  • Chronic fatigue

The mouth is a “real-time” picture of inflammation in the body. Had I known my long-term root canal could be silently contributing to systemic inflammation, I would’ve questioned it years sooner. It wasnt until Cole and I discovered someone like –  (Michelle Jorgensen and her work that I began to think that it was possible to learn a new way of looking at oral health.)

4. The Big Three Dental Disruptors No One Talks About

People chase symptoms endlessly without knowing these hidden oral triggers:

     1. Root Canals – A root canal removes the nerve but cannot fully remove bacteria. The tooth is dead and the immune system can’t reach inside it.
For some, this becomes a chronic infection site.

     2. Cavitations – Unhealed bone pockets (often from wisdom teeth removal) that harbor infection. They can affect lymph flow and cause fatigue, headaches, and inflammation.

     3. Low-Grade Oral Infections – Crowns, implants, or old dental work sometimes hide infections that don’t cause pain but stress the immune system continuously.

5. Oral Health Controls Your Immune System More Than You Think

Up to 80% of your immune system interacts with your mouth every single day.

Every swallow, breath, and bite sends microbial information into your system. So when something is “off” in the mouth, the immune system never gets a break. Personally, i realized, my body had been fighting an infection for years, which explains a lot about why certain inflammation patterns were so stubborn. Now that the source is gone, the rest of my body has a chance to finally get a reset.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), meridians are invisible pathways or channels throughout the body that carry vital energy, or qi, connecting organs and tissues, forming an energetic network essential for health, similar to rivers for water. These channels have specific points (acupuncture points) where qi can be accessed and regulated, influencing physical, emotional, and spiritual balance, with blockages leading to pain or illness.

This tooth meridian chart that will help you evaluate your own oral connections or concerns.

6. The Mouth–Mind Connection

Chronic oral inflammation triggers chronic fight-or-flight. That’s why dental issues often create:
  • Irritability
  • Brain fog
  • Anxiety
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Overactive stress response

If you’ve ever felt like your body was “overreacting,” there may have been a very real physiological stressor hiding in your mouth. I didn’t realize how much tension my system was holding until that infected tooth was gone. This isn’t just a chance to blame a bad attitude on someone or something… If something like that is on going and you cannot trace its origin – I would suggest you look into your oral health next.

7. How to Start Healing the Body Through the Mouth

(Here are some things you can do right now to begin your own journey of healing…)

     Reduce oral inflammation
  • Switch to mineral-rich toothpaste, oil pulling, red-light therapy, tallow-based oral balms.
     Support the lymphatic system
  • Under the jaw is a major drainage point — it must stay open for healing.
     Evaluate old dental work
  • Especially root canals, wisdom tooth sites, crowns, or lingering soreness.
      Balance the oral microbiome
  • Stop overusing antibacterial rinses. Support *good* bacteria.

Your Mouth Tells the Truth Before the Body Does.

My own experience taught me something I’ll never ignore again: The mouth holds clues the rest of the body can’t speak. That one root canal had been creating hidden inflammation for over a decade. Removing it was awful, but also the beginning of real healing. If you’ve been dealing with unexplained symptoms, chronic inflammation, or patterns your body can’t break… Don’t just look everywhere else. Look in the mirror. Look in your mouth.

That might be where the healing begins.

HOW TALLOW CAN HELP YOUR SKIN

HOW TALLOW CAN HELP YOUR SKIN

Tallow — especially grass-fed, nutrient-rich beef tallow — has a long history of use in skincare because it closely resembles the structure and composition of human skin’s natural oils (sebum). This similarity makes it both gentle and highly effective for many skin types.

Tallow acts like a skin nutrient delivery system — it doesn’t just sit on top of the skin; it integrates into it. Its composition (nearly identical to our natural oils) makes it highly bioavailable, deeply nourishing, and naturally balancing. You can check out the brand we use… click the button and use the code WATA for a special discount.

You can also see a real picture of when I had a rash break out randomly under my arms & how the tallow helped me in three days. (Bottom is the rash, & top is 3 days later.)

7 Ways To Be More Courageous

7 Ways To Be More Courageous

black punching bag

Courage is defined as the “quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain, etc., without fear; bravery.” Interestingly, the dictionary includes “without fear” as part of the definition of courage. I believe that courage is a choice you make. It is a choice not based on what you see or feel but who you are. Anyone can be courageous, age doesn’t matter, gender or size doesn’t factor in… and it helps to have a foundational reason to be courageous. For me, it is my faith in God and His divine plan for us that enables me to step into courage.

Why Courage Matters:

  • Courage (acting despite fear) is linked with lower psychological symptoms such as paranoia and obsessive-compulsive symptoms.
  • People with higher courage tend to handle stress better: acting courageously buffers the negative effects of stress.
  • Moral & social courage in workplaces correlates with better mental health, greater job satisfaction, and improved problem-solving.
  • Courage contributes to personal well-being: happier life, more authenticity & integrity, deeper relationships.
Joshua 1:9
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened,
and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.

Its important to know that the Israelites were about to step into the unknown. They were scared and intimidated, but God reminded them that His presence would go with them. And in the same way, He’s with you—He is a God who goes before you!

Steps You Can Take to Cultivate Courage

Here are practical steps to help you grow in courage in your life:

Step What to Do Why It Helps

1. Recognize & name your fear

Write down what you’re afraid of, or share with someone you trust. Be honest about what’s holding you back. Acknowledging fear reduces its power. When you name it, it becomes something you can face.
2. Identify your values & what matters Clarify what you believe, what you stand for. What principles or truths are non-negotiable for you? Values are the foundation. Courage tends to emerge more easily when you act in alignment with what matters most.
3. Start small – take low-risk steps Do things that are slightly uncomfortable but not overwhelming. E.g. speak up in small group, try something new, face a small fear. This builds “courage muscle.” Over time, doing small things gives you confidence for bigger steps.
4. Practice regularly & persist Don’t quit after one failure or one success. Keep pushing your boundary a little more each time. Resilience is built when courage becomes a habit, not a one-off. Consistency matters.
5. Use positive self-talk & visualization Talk to yourself with kindness, not self-criticism. Visualize yourself succeeding or handling fear well. Helps shift mindset: from “I can’t” to “I can try.” Preparing mentally improves performance in real situations.
6. Learn from failure & mistakes When things don’t go as planned, reflect on what you can learn. Don’t let failure define you. Mistakes are teachers. Learning diminishes fear of failing and increases willingness to try again.
7. Surround yourself with models & community Watch or read about people who show courage. Find friends, mentors who encourage you. Share your goals. Seeing others do it inspires you; community supports you when it’s hard.

Before Moses passed the leadership baton to Joshua, he reminded the people that courage doesn’t come from circumstances; it comes from knowing God is with you. You may be facing real battles today — some that leave you intimidated and leaning into fear. My hope is that you will be reminded that just as God was with Joshua and the Israelites, God is with you!

Deuteronomy 31:6
"
Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them,
for it is the LORD your God who goes with you. He will not leave you
or forsake you."

Below you will see a quiz I created to help you know where you stand when it comes to your level of courage and how you can grow in this season.

Take The courage Quiz:

Biblical Courage Quiz

Biblical Courage Quiz

“Be strong and courageous… for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” — Joshua 1:9

How it works

Answer each statement with Yes or No. “Yes” reflects actions and attitudes the Bible associates with courage (trusting God, obeying when it costs, speaking truth in love, persevering under pressure). Your score places you on a courage scale and gives targeted next steps with Scripture and examples (Joshua, Esther, Daniel, David, Peter & John, and more).

Questions

1) I choose obedience to God even when it risks comfort, approval, or opportunity.

(Daniel 3; Acts 5:29)

2) I speak truth in love even when it might offend or cost me socially.

(Ephesians 4:15; Acts 4:13–20)

3) I move forward despite fear because my trust is in God’s presence and promises.

(Joshua 1:9; Psalm 27:1)

4) I act when God opens a door, even if the timing is risky or inconvenient.

(Esther 4:14)

5) I take responsibility and run toward challenges, not away from them.

(1 Samuel 17:32–50)

6) I stay faithful under pressure or delay rather than quitting or compromising.

(Hebrews 10:36; James 1:12)

7) I rely on God’s power, not personal bravado or image, to do hard things.

(2 Corinthians 12:9–10; Zechariah 4:6)

8) I confess fear or weakness to God and ask for boldness.

(Psalm 56:3–4; Acts 4:29–31)

9) I refuse to be ruled by fear of people when it conflicts with fear of the Lord.

(Proverbs 29:25; Matthew 10:28)

10) I pursue righteousness boldly in daily life, not only in “big moments.”

(Proverbs 28:1; Hebrews 11)

IF YOU CRAVE THIS… YOU NEED THIS.

IF YOU CRAVE THIS… YOU NEED THIS.

brown cookie on white round plate

Cravings aren’t random—they’re your body’s built-in signal system. Often, when you crave certain foods, it’s not just about taste—it’s about missing nutrients your body is asking for. Learning to decode these signals can help you nourish yourself in a way that satisfies both your appetite and your health.

When you understand what your cravings really mean, you can give your body what it truly needs instead of chasing temporary fixes. Feed the deficiency, not just the desire, and you’ll find balance, energy, and fewer cravings over time.

The 5 R’s Of Gut Health

The 5 R’s Of Gut Health

served healthy breakfast on wooden table

I recently learned about the 5R protocol, which is a really practical way to support gut health. It’s often used in functional medicine and focuses on five key steps: removing things that harm the gut (like bad bacteria or irritants), replacing what’s missing (like enzymes or stomach acid), reinoculating with good bacteria, repairing the gut lining, and rebalancing lifestyle factors like stress and sleep.

What I found so interesting is how this approach doesn’t just treat symptoms—it actually helps get to the root of gut issues like bloating, fatigue, food sensitivities, or skin problems. If someone’s been dealing with any of that, starting with a good health history, reviewing symptoms, and maybe even doing some basic blood work or a stool test can make a big difference in figuring out what your body really needs.

It made me realize how much can change when you actually address the gut as the foundation of health. If you’re curious, even simple steps like cutting back inflammatory foods, taking a quality probiotic, or supporting digestion with things like digestive bitters or enzymes could be a great starting point.

This is a natural way to reset and heal your gut, and you can actually start applying it right now:

  • Remove: Cut back on sugar, processed foods, and gluten for a couple weeks. Try swapping soda for sparkling water or processed snacks for fruit and nuts.

  • Replace: Add things that help digestion, like a splash of apple cider vinegar in water before meals or a digestive enzyme.

  • Reinoculate: Eat more fermented foods like sauerkraut, kimchi, or plain yogurt—or take a good probiotic.

  • Repair: Support your gut lining with bone broth, aloe vera juice, or L-glutamine powder.

  • Rebalance: Prioritize sleep, reduce stress (deep breathing or walks outside), and move your body daily.

Even doing a few of these can really help with bloating, fatigue, and food sensitivities. It’s all about giving your gut what it needs to heal.
